Judging Others [A Prayer]

to-judge-or-not-to-judge1

Good and gracious God,

Sometimes on this journey toward you
we get mightily confused
and begin to think that our job
on this mysterious journey
has more to do
with the journey of others
than our own.

At times,
we find ourselves
measuring our own journeys
in relationship to other people’s lives.

Judging them.
Pitying them.
Excluding them.
Hurting them.
Dismissing them.

May we learn that our journey
is our own.

May we learn that our stories
are our own.

We cannot understand
where another person is going
because we will never fully know
where they have been.

Lead us not into the temptation
of comparing our lives to theirs
but deliver us from the all too human need
to measure ourselves against each other.

Give us this day
the insight that our journey
is our own.
It isn’t better,
it isn’t worse –
it simply is our own.

May we have the grace
to respond to the grace
you offer to us all
by extending the same grace
to each other.

Amen
