Be Like Thomas [A Prayer of Questioning]

Good and gracious God,

We want a deeper faith.

We want to know you more fully,
but we are also sometimes worried
to ask too many questions,
to have it seem too much like we are uncertain.

Let us hold up Thomas as an example,
of a love that is so unquenchable
it is willing to ask questions of faith
even in places others fear to tread.

Let him serve as and example and a reminder
of not only how we understand our faith,
but how we put it into practice.

When we see a world full of food
and yet also full of starving people,
lead us to ask the difficult questions
and to insist on better solutions.

When we see a world full of empty houses
and yet also full of homeless people,
lead us to ask the difficult questions
and to insist on better solutions.

When we see a world full of sickness
and yet full of medical solutions
lead us to ask the difficult questions
and to insist on better solutions.

When we see a world full of pain and grief
and full of people of many faiths
whose core and foundational beliefs
are love and compassion
lead us to ask the difficult questions
and to insist on better solutions.

We take this moment of prayer for
those in our lives who are sick or struggling.

We also pray for those in this world
who are struggling with their situation
because of health, housing or nourishment issues.

We pray for those who are victims of violence,
everything from loved ones in their homes,
to the tragedy of war.

And we ask for encouragement and inspiration
on how we can serve as your hands and feet
in this world
to make a difference for all.

Amen.
