Letting Go of Self-importance [A Prayer]

arrogance5

Good and gracious God,

Sometimes
to be the people
we feel called to be
we must do things
which can feel
impossible.

Most of us have doubts
and questions
and negative thoughts
about ourselves
at times.

Sometimes it seems
humanity
is just wired that way.

Pride and feeling important
can feel like a needed
counterbalance
to the way
we sometimes
see ourselves.

Yet, Jesus asked us
to become humble,
the least of these,
last –
to put others before ourselves,
to let go of our need to be important…

to let go of our need
to be important
in the eyes of the world.

He asked us to redefine
what “important” is,
to seek out value
in valuing others,
to find a positive self image
in seeing others positively,
to discover ourselves
to be equal to others
by working toward
the equality of all.

Sometimes
to be the people
we feel called to be
we must do things
which seem
impossible…

until we begin to do them.

Remind us
that your Love
encourages and supports us
as we work to create
a better world –
that the principalities
of this world
do not win
in the end –
that the one thing
that does matter
in this life
is
each other
and the love we share.

Amen.

  1. Reading this prayer reminded me of a short article about bullies and how insecure they really are. Their bad behaviors of anger and hatred and violence mirror their own insecurity. Responding to them with the same bad behaviors only authenticates their self loathing.
